Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom teeth removal is a surgical procedure in which one or more wisdom teeth are removed to ease pain or prevent potential complications that can arise from the growth of these “third molars.”
At Pinellas Oral Surgery and Implant Center wisdom teeth removal is a procedure performed to remove one or more of the wisdom teeth that affects the patient’s health. Problems arise when wisdom tooth becomes impacted or when there is not adequate room for them to grow in. Even if your wisdom teeth are not currently causing pain, Dr. José F. Lázaro may still perform a wisdom teeth removal surgery due to the potential complications that can cause damage to your surrounding teeth later on. Sometimes, wisdom teeth do not emerge from the gums in the correct alignment or become trapped underneath the gum tissue and above the jawbone. Impacted teeth can be painful, causing swelling and even infection. Problems with wisdom teeth that are not properly addressed can even cause damage to surrounding teeth, bone, gums and negatively affect the alignment of your smile. In severe cases, impacted wisdom teeth can even eventually cause the cysts or tumors to form that can damage the jaw. Because of all these potential complications, it is recommended that wisdom teeth be removed by an experienced oral surgeon.
Wisdom teeth generally begin to “grow in,” or erupt, in the late teens through mid-twenties. Wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure that begins with imaging to understand what the tooth is doing under the surface of the gums.
During the wisdom teeth removal procedure the patient will be sedated with either conscious or general anesthetic depending on the number of teeth extracted, among other factors. Sedation and anesthetics are discussed with the patient during the visit prior to your extraction removal procedure.
In your late teen years and into your early twenties, wisdom teeth begin to erupt, or grow in. Sometimes, this happens with no complications, and they grow in normally. Other times, wisdom teeth can cause pain as they erupt and can erupt partially or at an angle, pushing into and crowding neighboring teeth.
Wisdom teeth removal is a common surgery, but you still may feel anxious about the procedure. Wisdom teeth removal surgery will include sedation to ensure comfort during the procedure. Dr. Lázaro and his staff will prep for what to expect during your appointment and we will make sure you know what to expect during recovery.
